EDI Overview
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a form of electronic commerce. Specifically, EDI is an application-to-application electronic exchange of business documents in a pre-defined standard format. EDI standards provide common formats for business documents such as purchase orders, purchase order acknowledgements, invoices and payment/remittance advice.

The concept and technology of EDI have been around since the late 1960s. Many large corporations have long been using EDI, some for as many as 25 years. In recent years, EDI has caught the attention of the world, as governments and private industries strive to become more competitive internationally and increase profitability.

Without an electronic commerce solution in place, a company enters data into a business application, prints a form containing the data (such as a purchase order), and then mails or faxes this form to a trading partner. The trading partner, after receiving the form, must then re-key the data into another business application. Inherent in this process are poor response times - use of the postal system can add days to the exchange process, excessive paperwork for both companies involved in the exchange, and the potential for errors as information is transcribed.

Companies that utilize EDI adhere to universally accepted document standards. These standards, or formats, are defined by EDI Standards bodies to permit the sharing of information between dissimilar business and accounting systems.

Credit Card Processing integrates electronic credit card transaction processing into MAS 90 Sales Order and e-Business Manager modules - especially important for wholesalers and distributors in the era of e-commerce.
