In a 2002 CSI survey, 90 percent of companies that responded reported some network intrusion in the past year, despite deployment of traditional security solutions. The costs of these intrusions will vary from company to company, but the following facts are worth considering when evaluating your level of exposure:
• Fortune 1000 companies lost more than $59 billion in 2001 due to theft of proprietary information, according to a study released by the American Society for Industrial Security and consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.
• A 2003 study by Meta Group reports that, despite the fact that more than 90 percent of organizations employ antivirus software, a significant number of these companies still incurred financial damages, averaging $283,000 a year.
• 251 companies in the 2003 CSI/FBI survey reported losses of over $202 million.
